He gives instructions to Van on how he desires to be buried. The Indian, John, is now blind and very ill. Skimmerhorn and Biggs are arrested by the police on suspicion of being involved in the bank robbery since the Orangeburg envelope is found on them. The Dutch crew sail off in their ship called The Onrust. The robbers, Elkus, Dope and Buddy, confess to the bank robbery and are apprehended by the police. Lise resigns herself to her fate as a ghost and decides to leave Van and let Judith have him. She is even strong enough to reject Dewitt's advances to her. When Skimmerhorn Senior bids with the offer of fifty thousand, Van finally relents when his Indian friend tells him that High Tor is no longer valuable.2.Judith regrets her decision to separate from Van and she returns to him. He no longer feels that he has to fight with Judith on this issue and his pride is not wounded when she says that she leaves the decision up to him. When Judith returns to Van and respects his opinion to keep High Tor, Van feels self-gratification and he is able to distance himself from High Tor. He gives up hope when his Indian friend, John, tells him that the land is only ruins and will always be in ruins.
